Gypsum Whyalla, South Australia Specimen 13cm x 10cm |
Much of inland Australia is covered with dry saline lakebeds. Periodically they flood, leaching minerals from the surrounding countryside into their waters. As the lakes dry up, various minerals crystallise out of the brine. Buried in the muddy bottom or in the saline waters, lovely specimens of the Calcium Sulphate, Gypsum, crystallise out. This specimen is from a dry lakebed in South Australia and is relatively common. |
